Hogeweyk is a nursing home disguised to look like the outside world. It helps people with mild to severe dementia suffer a little bit less in their remaining years, facility manager Eloy van Hal told Business Insider. That’s so sad to hear – thank you for sharing Gordon.

The residents here take fewer medications, eat better and live longer. And although joy is a hard thing to measure, the staff at Hogewey think their residents are more content on a day to day to basis. At Bild, we are excited to see “culture change” moving forward in long-term care. Recently published articles related to the Hogewey Nursing Home in Weesp, Netherlands appear to reveal a successful culture change story.
The staff of medical professionals tries to cater to each resident based on their unique needs, van Hal said.
There is a nursing home behind the scenes at Hogewey. The nursing home adheres to all the standards of care established by the Dutch government. The nursing home is staffed by nurses, rehabilitation teams, and psychologists.
It is world famous; inclusive; truly person-centred with high-quality care and treatment; revolutionary; groundbreaking; disruptive; and sustainable, and it breaks the stigma of dementia. We do all this so that people with dementia can continue their lives in a world that is safe for them and open to everyone. These 1/2 hour sessions are completely inadequate. Every facility, should have an Activity Director that provides daily activities for every resident at the resident’s level of ability. Get in there and find out how the care community that your loved one is in is being cared for. Bring your own activities to do with your loved one when you visit.
| THE CASE HOGEWEY, A NURSING HOME FOR PEOPLE
We had 1 aide to 6 Residents and 1 Nurse to 35 Residents. I quit because I could not provide quality care and could not take the guilt of not being the Nurse I trained to be. How can anyone nurse 35 Residents at one time and give good, consistent care, you can’t.

This article does mention having twice the amount of staff to residents, but nothing directly discussing interventions and management of resident-to-resident violence and abuse. Any facts about this from those who know would be great! We all have aging loved ones and these are very real concerns as we all grow older and look for appropriate care in the event that we can no longer provide that ourselves.
Excellent, highly complex care for people with dementia
"All the residents living here need medical treatment, yes. They all have medication. They all have advanced stage of dementia," van Hal said. "But they are first a person. That's why there are people living here with dementia, and not demented people." The project creates opportunities for various outdoor activities.
The CNN report brought us a lot of publicity, but we were not thrilled with the ‘Dementia Village’ label. With the words Dementia Village, the focus is on the disease (i.e. the dementia). The Hogeweyk® looks and feels like an ordinary neighbourhood where the focus is not on dementia, but on people and on a normal life. If you would like to learn more about our thoughts on this, get in touch—we are happy to discuss it with you.
As a LPN in a resident care home l saw how quickly the residents got bored. I think it is awesome, it is about time the seniors of our fine world are being treated, with respect, and like they are still important in society instead of being tucked away and basically forgot about. I know myself being the the middle sixties, and sound mind at the moment, makes a person feel that their is out there some compassion for the elders.

My parents don’t have dementia but there are many in our local care home. Quality care is compromised all the time due to no ratios in Canada , short staffed, and burnt out workers. Hopefully, this is the new face of dementia care. Unfortunately, new things and ideas usually take way too much time to implement and to become the norm, no matter how good they are. The village is reimbursed by Dutch insurance providers. The village receives the same level of reimbursement as other nursing homes.
Residents at Hogewey can stroll through the open courtyard or help caregivers tend to one of the many gardens. Even just sitting on a bench in the outdoors can help improve their mood and overall well-being, research has found. Alzheimer's and dementia sufferers are widely encouraged to stay physically active to keep their minds and bodies engaged. The staff of medical professionals tries to cater to each resident based on their unique needs, van Hal said. The layout of the gardens have been adapted to accommodate the residents. A main pedestrian path provides a clear route to the various gardens and a sense of orientation.
AFH’s are a nicer choice, but in most facilities they don’t get the attention and activity that they need to stay active and physically and mentally healthy. Admission to these facilities is a death sentence…sometimes a long lingering one, where they do nothing and no longer know anyone. I work in a long term care facility near This is so much better than the current program we have. It is a daily one on one 1/2 hour session that includes simple math, simple reading aloud and matching numbered chips to corresponding numbers on magnetic board.
While I understand the need for a safe facility that gives the patients reign to exercise and move about, creating a human terrarium is a little on the …Orwellian side. Fantastic. What an efficient and compassionate way to support those with dementia…improving life all around. If you are looking for activities for dementia try Best Alzheimer’s Products – 100s of games, activities, etc. for people with Alzheimer’s and dementia. Altmuehlsee is according to me the most beautiful lake in the area.
An environment in harmony with the resident’s salutogenesis eliminates many of these emotions and focuses on health. Research has found that loneliness is just as deadly as smokingand twice as lethal as obesity. As seniors tend to be the age group that most often lives by themselves, Hogeweyk feels a responsibility to make sure people get as much social interaction as they require.
The village welcomes about forty new residents each year. All residents of Hogewey have been diagnosed with advanced dementia. The concept is unique in the Netherlands, though other care organizations have adopted similar features. How much of dementia is a result of disease, and how much is a result of how we treat it? While dementia-only living facilities have been created outside the Netherlands, none of them have offered the amenities or level of care per patient that Hogeway provides. Last year, inspired by Hogewey, a nursing home in Fartown, England, built a 1950s village for its residents; a similar project is underway in Wiedlisbach, Switzerland.
